Environmental Management

NHN strives to minimize environmental impact throughout all business activities and create a better natural environment and sustainable daily lives through its technology and services. In our vision to implement an eco-friendly management, we have established environmental and energy policies and have installed and operated a department dedicated for an environmental management such as the ESG Environment and Energy Technology Team.

Environmental Management System

Environment and Energy Policy
NHN establishes and implements the following Environmental and Energy Policy to minimize negative environmental impacts that may occur by providing various IT-based services, and
actively respond to global climate change issue by improving energy efficiency and
minimizing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions.
  • All NHN executives and employees must participate and practice energy and environmental management activities to implement the policy in an active manner.
  • NHN follows relevant laws and guidelines regarding energy and environmental regulations.
  • Reduce GHG emissions by applying energy-efficient technology and increasing the use of renewable energy.

Environmental and Energy Management System Certification

NHN has acquired both environment management system (ISO 14001) and energy management system (ISO 50001) certifications for its headquarters building Play Museum and Play Hub (NCC1), its data center in Pangyo in August 2022. NHN has been pushing ahead with eco-friendly management in a systematic manner by adopting an environment and energy management system that meets the global standards throughout its overall business activities. At the same time, acquiring environment and energy management system certification is a representation of our efforts to contribute to 13 goals in areas including human, earth and prosperity among 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proclaimed by UN. We plan to conduct a management review periodically by an accredited external organization to be evaluated and verified of our performance made in the environment.

  • * United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs):17 policy goals that the global countries agreed to achieve jointly by 2030 for the sustainable development of humankind at the UN General Assembly in September 2015

Urban eco-friendly Data Center

NHN’s data center ‘Play Hub (NCC1)’ in Pangyo is an eco-friendly data center that applies various energy-saving technologies.
It boasts high energy efficiency with PUE 1.2~1.3. We strive to develop and introduce better eco-friendly technologies through continuous energy saving projects, not being complacent with the current energy efficiency. Based on the energy saving projects carried out from 2017 to 2021, NCC1 is saving about 4.45 million kWh of electricity per year which can also be interpreted as 510 million won of energy costs per year.

  • * PUE(Power Usage Effectiveness) : As a value obtained from dividing the total electricity used in the data center by the amount
consumed by IT equipment, the closer to 1, the more energy effective.
Eco-friendly Elements at NCC1
Enhance Energy Efficiency
  • Maximized cooling efficiency by applying the first patented ‘indirect evaporative cooling system’ in Korea and HVAC on the ceiling.

  • Minimized power loss by separating cold and hot aisle by installing containment.

  • Lowered the outside air temperature sucked into the HVAC by about 3°C with a mist spray device.

  • Continue energy-saving efforts such as installing cooling fog for generator air inlet in 2020, reinforcing HVAC insulation, changing server room operating conditions and improving air-conditioning efficiency by upgrading the pre-filter replacement in 2021

High-density Operation Environment
  • Built a modular server room considering the IT life cycle, developed/applied its own rack with adjustable width

  • Provides an optimized operating environment for cloud computing, such as high- density capacity and UPS power supply

  • Maintain PUE
    1.2~1.3
  • Reduced annual power
    usage by
    4.45M kWh
  • Saved annual energy
    cost by
    500M won

Eco-friendly Office

The Play Museum, NHN’s headquarter building, was constructed as an eco-friendly office space from the design stage, mindful of eco-friendly space planning, facilities and materials. The Play Museum has acquired the ‘Platinum’ certificate in 2013 which is the highest level in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a renowned program for accrediting eco-friendly construction as it was highly praised for its efforts to carefully consider the impact on the environment when constructing the building as well as the surrounding environment, from site and material selection to energy efficiency.

Eco-friendly Elements at Play Museum
Energy Reduction
Policy
  • Product to reduce power and water consumption

Annual power consumption is reduced by 25% compared to conventional fluorescent lamps by installing LED lights in public spaces.

Water-saving devices, standby power cut-off systems, auto-lighting control.

  • Natural light and ventilation

Natural light with vertical louvers, natural ventilation through hive and rooftop
    windows.

  • Improved space efficiency and reduced power consumption when moving

Enhanced space efficiency and reduced power consumption when moving by making multi-purpose space on the first basement level.

Staircase are located on the center of the building with easier accessibility and
41.7Wh of electricity is saved as stairs are used more often instead of elevators.

Construction
Material
  • Used minimal construction material and discarded minimum waste

Space planning void of columns so that it can be easily rearranged. Conference
tables made according to the size of raw materials for minimal waste.

  • Use materials in consideration of nature's recovery rate

Selected materials that emit lesser organic compounds and do not contain
    formaldehyde or resin.

Chose eco-certified bamboo access floorboards made from waste-paper and used a packing box as a finishing material.

Environmental
Impact Reduction
Strategies
  • Minimize Carbon Emissions

Approx. 514 kg of greenhouse gas are less emitted per day by operating a bike
parking lot that can accommodate up to 130 bicycles.

  • Environmental Pollution Management Plan

Implemented an environmental pollution management plan to reduce pollution from
    the construction site.

  • Reduce Indoor Air Pollution

Built with an adhesive-free structure and used eco-friendly adhesives, if needed.

Generating fresh air by planting many greens.

Environmental Movement

NHN has been in the forefront of engaging in various eco-friendly activities which is also participated by its members in their daily lives. NHN strives to form a company-wide consensus on environmental management and to encourage every day practice. From 2021, office supplies and consumables for in-house facilities are replaced with eco-friendly products and reusable items. We have been running various campaigns regularly such as the 'Good Use' campaign that collects and reuses unused items as well as ‘Energy Use Data Sharing’ to enhance the awareness on how much energy has been used internally.

In-house Eco-friendly Actions
Type Activities Contribution to the Environment
Use Ecofriendly Products
  • Replaced the packaging in the company’s OA booth to paper buffer and paper tape.

  • Prepared recycled paper.

  • Replaced the take-out lunch box at the cafeteria with pulp container.
